The Chatham Heritage and Conservation Trust (CHART) is still in the process of formation. The proposed purposes of the Trust are;

Primary Purpose

  • To protect and restore the natural and historic heritage of the Chatham Islands.

Ancillary purposes

  • To promote, restore and enhance the conservation of the Chatham Islands ecological, cultural and heritage resources both on land privately owned and on land owned by the crown.
  • To focus on fostering community involvement in protecting and enhancing Chatham Islands heritage.
  • To co-ordinate and support landowners efforts to control and eradicate pest species on their land.
  • To work co-operatively with iwi and the Department of Conservation and any other party for the protection and restoration of Chatham Islands heritage.
  • To protect and restore endemic flora and fauna.
  • To preserve natural landscapes.
  • To protect private and public land to enhance natural values.
  • To control and eradicate invasive plants and animals.
  • To raise moneys and to engage or employ staff or contractors to further the objectives of the Trust.
  • To foster community involvement.
  • To co-operate with Department of Conservation, local agencies, iwi and other parties to advance the primary purpose of the Trust.
  • To educate and raise community awareness of the natural and historic heritage of the Chatham Island.
  • To generate employment and eco-opportunities for the Chatham Islands community.
  • To encourage and facilitate public enjoyment of natural and historic features and values of the Chatham Islands.
  • To assist and encourage private and public landowners in protection of conservation and historic values on their land.
  • To accept gifts, bequests, grants, subscription, property, goods and services.
  • To carry out such other lawful activities which are incidental or conducive to attaining the objects and purposes of the Trust.
